You're right, I was mixing them up because my tester has an "Open/Short" result. If buying today, I'd probably get a Fluke LRAT-2000.

Physical layer testing includes cable (TDR) testing, toning, wiremapping. Future? Get a good tester!ĮDIT: I got my CableIQ several years ago. The second RJ-45 management port connects to 10/100/1000Mbps Ethernet for. What a sweet tool! It will show all kinds of information, will blink the switch lights so you find the connected cable, tell how long the cable is, how far a break is, what's connected (computer or switch), wire mapping, and quite a bit more.įor now, do as the others have recommend and tone it. Multiple protocols can be decoded and displayed for captured Ethernet, SONET, or SDH frames at full wire speed up to 400 Gbps, augmented by an optional. This cheap tester will waste more time than it is worth. I never had one quite that low end, but finally bought a Fluke Cable IQ Qualification Tester. Anritsus powerful Ethernet/IP network data analyzers incorporate the dual functionality of wire speed performance analysis and network monitoring in the same instrument. It usually means that a computer or switch is on the other end, and these cheap testers cannot tell what it is.

A "short" means that two wires are connected together somewhere, either the actual wires, or there is a device at the other end that has those two pins connecting to complete the circuit. An "open" circuit means nothing is on the other end, or there is a break in the wires somewhere in between.

"No connection on the other side" is an "open" circuit, not a short circuit. "Short = no connection on the other side."
